In this podcast we are speaking with two Sgoil Gàidhlig Bhaile an Taigh Mhóir students, Gloria Ngo and Farida Shourbaji. Don’t sound like particularly Scottish names? True. While many people may feel they have a sense of what a Gael looks like, there are speakers of color in the Gaelic learning community that through the language and culture forge a bond that makes them part of the wider Gaelic community. In fact, people of diverse ethnic backgrounds have long had a claim on the language. This may be particularly true in the United States where cultures have mixed through marriage and proximity regularly. This challenges a common perception that Scottish ethnicity is essential and biological.
Listen as we explore how Gloria and Farida opened the gate to incorporate Scottish Gaelic into their sense of belonging.

Take a Gàidhlig language class or a Gàidhlig song class. There will be language and song workshops for beginners and more advanced learners. And listen to some excellent singers compete in the Mòd. Interested in singing in a future Mòd? We have something fior you, too – a session to help prepare folks to sing in a Mòd.
Siud sibh a-nis! Bidh latha air leth againn!

We will be joined at the Chesapeake Mòd by Eilidh MacKinnon, Deputy Head of the Scottish Government USA office. Eilidh has only just arrived in the country. Join us in giving her a warm welcome at the Chesapeake Mòd

Bidh Òmar Bhochanan a’ teagasg chlasaichean prìobhaideach air-loidhne as t-samhradh. Obraichidh i còmhla ri luchd-ionnsachaidh leotha fhèin air rud sam bith air am bu toigh leotha fòcas a chur. Dh’ fhaodadh seo a bhith na dheagh chothrom airson drochaid a dhèanamh eadar na bliadhnaichean sgoile agus do chuid Ghàidhlig a leasachadh.Tha deagh naidheachd againn dhuibh! Tha sinn glè thoilichte a cuir an cèill gum bi a’ chiad Mhòd Chesapeake ann san Lùnastal. Bidh fàilte air a h-uile duine. An dòchas gum faic sinn ann sibh!
We have exciting news! We are very pleased to announce that the inaugural Chesapeake Mòd will be in August. All are welcome. Hope to see you there!
