On a spit of land at the narrowest part of the Chesapeake Bay in full view of the Calvert Cliffs we will form our own little temporary Gàidhlig-speaking community as we learn together in a beautiful setting. The immersion weekend is only two days, but it will be packed and we  hope you leave having had an extraordinary experience that strengthens the Gaelic you use at home.

Cove Point Lighthouse - 1

The weekend will include interactive learning, dialogue, workshops and possibly a field trip.  You will be speaking Gaelic in a variety of settings: workshops, meals, singing, walks outside, and casual home-style gatherings. Study will focus on grammar and conversational skills, punctuated by discussions on the underlying beauty of the language, and promote correct pronunciation, proper idiom, and development of vocabulary.  Our aim is to foster conversational ability and fluency, so the focus is on contemporary Gaelic, as used in modern-day daily life.

The setting is incomparable, Each day you will wake to and spend your day right next to the Chesapeake Bay and one of the many historic lighthouses that have been so important to the maritime culture of the area.

An Làrach/The Site

The oldest continuously operated lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay, Cove Point Lighthouse was built in 1828.  It sits on seven acres right next to the Chesapeake Bay with a view of Calvert Cliffs.  Still fully operational electronically, it is now part of the Calvert Marine Museum.  The immersion session will be based in the keeper’s house. The site is fenced and has beach access. Some tourists may be on the grounds as the lighthouse is open to the public from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm each day.

Cisean teagaisg ‘s ro-chlàradh/Tuition & Registration

Tuition is $100 per person.  The cost of the weekend per person is much higher, but we are committed to making study accessible to as many as possible and are applying for funding to underwrite the rest of the costs.

The tuition includes lodging, all study materials, and the following meals: Friday night light fare; Saturday breakfast, lunch, and dinner; and Sunday breakfast.  We encourage you to bring any other beverages, snacks, and foodstuffs you may need.

One-half of the tuition ($50) must be paid at the time of reservation.  The remaining $50 must be paid by 1 November 2020. To register, write to sgoilgaidhlig@gmail.comand we will send you the link for the registration form

Àiteachan-fuirich/Accommodations

Originally a 1 ⅓-story house, the lighthouse keeper’s house was enlarged to a 2 ½-story duplex in 1925 to accommodate two keepers and their families.  Each side of the house contains three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, one half-bath, a kitchen, a dining room, and a living room with a pull-out sofa. Participants will have limited use of the refrigerators.  Washer dryers on each side are available for use.

Beds will be allotted on a first come first serve basis and by need.  After the beds are distributed other registrants may end up with air mattresses. So, reserve your space early.
